For those who have been drinking matcha all along.
Recently, katakuchi matcha bowls have become very popular—they pour easily and work well for making matcha lattes. But if you've been drinking matcha for a while, you'll probably understand that the traditional matcha bowl is something else entirely.
The wide rim lets the chasen open up properly. The rounded base follows the curve of your wrist as you whisk, giving you an even, fine foam. Held between both hands, the warmth of the bowl slowly reaches your palms—something a katakuchi can't give you.
This time we've brought in the Pastel Jelly matcha bowl from Shinko Kiln. A Mino ware workshop founded in Meiji 28, their pastel glazes flow naturally during firing, like jelly poured over dessert—soft and rounded. Two colours blend across the bowl, and the depth of each glaze run is different every time.
The traditional bowl shape has a feel of its own—you'll understand once you've used it.
